Protect

Keep your data secure at every stage of your project.

Ensure that all computer hard drives (and other devices such as USB keys and flash drives) are encrypted to prevent unauthorized access to information. McAfee Whole Disk Encryption (WDE) is centrally supported by UBC IT and provides this functionality.

Use a secure environment to share selected research data with individuals and/or groups. Free cloud services such as Dropbox and Google Drive are not recommended while ethics offices and granting agencies typically prohibit them for research data sharing or storage.

Please see our data privacy and security best practices Checklist that outlines key considerations for researchers when working with sensitive data and Personal Information.

Moreover, please see our pages for Anonymization and De-identification of research data

UBC Policy #104 outlines the responsibilities of members of the University community with respect to the acceptable use and security of University electronic information and the services, devices and facilities that store or transmit this information.
